TANF

TANF stands for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families administered by the federal government agency, Office of Family Assistance.  TANF is a program that is funded by the federal government by providing state governments with funds and grants to provide services to families in need of assistance economically.  TANF can be also known as welfare for needy families.   At one time, the face of welfare, was single black females with many children at least three or more.  But, the face of welfare, has changed greatly due to the economic climate of the 21st Century.  Also, many misconceptions of who receives TANF has been debunked in the past several years.  The main culprits of creating such misconceptions and stereotypes of who receives TANF funds and assistance has been the rich and powerful members the Republican Party.

One misconception about individuals who receive benefits and assistance from the TANF program is that the individuals who receive such benefits are lazy, shiftless, and do not want to work.  Another misconception about people who receive welfare is that there are more minorities on welfare than white people.  But, in reality, there are more white people who receive some form of temporary assistance than any one group of minorities.  The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families was set-up to assist families and individuals who have lost their job, and need some form of financial assistance until they are able to get back on their feet.  A third misconception about welfare is that there is a multi-generation of families on welfare.  For example, if the grandmother was on welfare, then the daughter and granddaughter will be on it as well.  Whereas, in reality, the average individual who receives assistance from TANF stays it on for no more than five years and will never need the temporary assistance again in their lifetime.  A fourth misconception about Temporary Assistance for Needy Assistance is that the individuals who receive the benefits feel that they are entitled to it and they are not.  But, in reality the TANF program is set-up to assist families and individuals who have lost their job and need temporary financial assistance to maintain their livelihood and get back on their feet.  Also, TANF is a program that is funded by federal and state taxes paid by hardworking American citizens, who in turn, should be allowed to use the federal program, if they find that they need the assistance.

The TANF program is set-up to assist hardworking Americans who may need temporary cash assistance at one time in their life.  Any American citizen needing assistance when they have been laid off of their job should not be ashamed to ask for it.  The main reason for the TANF program is that any hardworking American who works and pay taxes has the right and is entitled to some kind of assistance from the state governments and federal government in their time of need.  TANF is just a temporary program that assists individuals who need temporary assistance financially and the average person that receives such benefits only stays on the program for no more than five years.
